Battery capacity describes how much charge a battery can store, usually shown in ampere-hours (Ah). It helps indicate potential energy storage, but it does not determine UPS runtime by itself.

What battery capacity means

Battery capacity describes the amount of electrical charge a battery can store. On UPS products, it is commonly listed in ampere-hours (Ah), such as 5 Ah, 7 Ah, or 9 Ah.

UPSFit’s published product data also includes labels such as watt-hours (Wh) and VAh. These units should not be treated as interchangeable without knowing the relevant voltage and how the manufacturer defines the specification. A higher Ah figure can indicate more stored charge when comparing otherwise similar batteries, but the number alone is not a complete measure of energy or runtime.

Why it matters on UPSFit

Battery capacity is useful when comparing the battery-storage specifications of UPS products. The published catalog most commonly lists 9 Ah and 7 Ah batteries, with additional products showing 5 Ah, 7.2 Ah, 4.5 Ah, 8.5 Ah, 12 Ah, and 6 Ah. Some products are listed at 108 Wh or 84 Wh, while others use 9 VAh or 12 VAh.

These values help you identify what a product page claims about its battery, but they do not by themselves establish how long the UPS will power connected equipment. Actual runtime can depend on the load, battery condition, conversion losses, operating mode, and other product specifications that may not be shown in the capacity field.

What the label does not tell you

Battery capacity is a specification, not a quality rating. A larger number does not automatically mean a better UPS, longer runtime in every situation, or a more suitable product for a particular load.

An Ah label also does not state:

  • The UPS’s supported output load
  • The expected runtime at your equipment’s load
  • The battery’s age, condition, or replacement status
  • The battery chemistry or construction
  • Whether the listed value applies to one battery or a complete battery set
  • How a VAh value relates to the product’s battery energy

If a listing provides only a capacity value, these details remain unknown unless they appear elsewhere on the product page or in the manufacturer’s documentation.

What to check on a product page

Check the capacity number and unit first. Compare Ah values with other Ah values only when the battery voltage and configuration are also comparable. If the page uses Wh or VAh instead, avoid converting the value unless the necessary voltage and definitions are provided.

For a more practical comparison, look for a stated UPS runtime at a specified load, along with battery voltage, output capacity, and information about battery replacement. These nearby specifications provide context that battery capacity alone cannot supply.
