What is a pure sine wave?
A pure sine wave is a type of alternating-current (AC) output waveform. Its voltage changes smoothly and periodically, closely resembling the waveform supplied by a typical utility grid.
UPS systems and power inverters may identify their output as pure sine wave. This is a capability description, not a complete assessment of the product.
Why does it matter when buying or comparing?
Some equipment is designed for, or may operate more predictably with, a pure sine wave. This can include certain motor-driven devices, power supplies, audio equipment, and other loads whose manufacturer specifies a waveform requirement.

What should you check on a product page or spec sheet?
Check the following details:
- The exact output wording, such as pure sine wave or sine wave
- Output voltage and frequency, including whether they match your equipment
- Continuous and peak or surge power ratings
- THD, if provided
- Whether the waveform specification applies in all operating modes, including battery mode
- Manufacturer guidance for motors, chargers, audio equipment, or other loads you plan to connect
- Transfer time and runtime requirements for UPS products
- Required plugs, outlets, voltage, and regional compatibility
If THD, operating-mode behavior, or load compatibility is not published, treat those details as unknown rather than inferring them from the pure sine wave label.
