VA

VA means volt-amperes, a measure of apparent power. It describes the electrical capacity a product can handle, but it is not the same as watts, which measure real power.

What is VA?

VA stands for volt-amperes. It measures apparent power, which combines the voltage and current in an electrical system.

VA is not the same as watts. Watts measure real power—the power that equipment actually uses—while VA represents the electrical load presented to the supply. Product capacity is often shown in kVA, where 1 kVA equals 1,000 VA.

On UPSFit product pages, capacity may be listed in values such as 0.75 kVA, 1 kVA, 1.5 kVA, 2 kVA, 2.2 kVA, 3 kVA, 5 kVA, 6 kVA, 10 kVA, 15 kVA, 20 kVA, or 30 kVA.

Why does VA matter when buying or comparing?

VA helps you compare the apparent-power capacity of products and judge whether a product is sized for the electrical load you intend to connect.

You should also check the watt rating. The relationship between VA and watts depends on the equipment’s power factor, so two products with the same VA rating may not have the same usable watt capacity. A product with a higher VA rating is not automatically better in every respect; it may simply have a higher capacity.

When does VA matter—and when does it not?

VA matters when sizing or comparing equipment that supplies electrical loads, especially when the product specifications provide both VA or kVA and watts.

It matters less when you are comparing features unrelated to electrical capacity, such as physical design, controls, connectivity, or other specifications. VA also does not by itself tell you whether a product is suitable for a particular device. The connected load, its power factor, and any starting or changing demand remain important.

What does VA not tell you?

A VA or kVA figure does not tell you:

  • How efficiently the product operates
  • Whether it can support a specific device
  • How it performs under changing or startup loads
  • How long it can run a load
  • The product’s build quality, reliability, or safety
  • Whether it includes other features you need

A capacity figure is a capability specification, not a quality rating. A higher VA value does not prove that the product is better made or better suited to your use.

VA also does not reveal the watt capacity unless the product page or spec sheet provides the relevant watt rating or power-factor information. If that information is missing, the usable real-power capacity stays unknown.

What should you check on a product page or spec sheet?

Check the following details:

  • Rated capacity in VA or kVA
  • Rated output in watts
  • Stated power factor, if provided
  • Whether the rating is output capacity rather than input capacity
  • The output voltage and phase information, where relevant to your setup
  • Load limits, operating conditions, and any stated restrictions
  • Runtime information if backup duration matters
  • Connector, outlet, or interface details needed by your equipment

Compare the product’s watt rating with the actual power requirements of your equipment rather than relying on the VA figure alone. If the page lists only VA or kVA, the watt capacity and suitability for a particular load may remain unknown.
